About Apollo 4 and the First Saturn V Test
Apollo 4, also known as SA-501, launched on November 9, 1967 as the first test flight of the Saturn V launch vehicle, the rocket that would later send astronauts to the Moon. The mission lifted off from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, becoming the first launch ever from the new Saturn V pads at LC 39.
This was an all up test, meaning all three stages of the Saturn V and the Apollo Command and Service Module were fully functional and flown together on the very first flight. During its roughly 8.5 hour mission, Apollo 4 placed the spacecraft into orbit, restarted the S IVB third stage, and sent the Command Module on a high speed reentry that simulated a return from the Moon. The mission was declared a complete success and proved that the Saturn V could do the job it was designed for.
Apollo 4 gave NASA the confidence to move ahead quickly with crewed Saturn V missions, leading to Apollo 8 orbiting the Moon in 1968 and Apollo 11 landing on the lunar surface in 1969. This poster turns that engineering milestone into a striking piece of wall art that celebrates the start of the Saturn V era and the momentum that carried the Apollo program to the Moon.
