About the Cape Hatteras Chart

Cape Hatteras: Graveyard of the Atlantic. This poster reproduces U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey nautical chart No. 1232, the 1942 edition at a scale of 1:80,000, covering Outer Banks, North Carolina.

Cape Hatteras juts into the Atlantic on North Carolina's Outer Banks. Its shifting shoals earned the coast the name Graveyard of the Atlantic, and its beaches are some of the East Coast's best-known surf spots. The data row marks Cape Point at 35.23°N 75.53°W. Soundings, shoreline and coastal landmarks appear just as the surveyors charted them.

This is a real historical nautical chart from NOAA's Office of Coast Survey collection, reproduced from the original, not a modern redraw. It shows the coast as charted in 1942 and is for decoration only — not for navigation.
