About Messier 30 in Capricornus
The real sky behind your sign. Messier 30 is a globular cluster about 28,000 light-years away in the constellation Capricornus, imaged with the Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys in 2009.
This dense swarm of several hundred thousand stars is about 90 light-years across and formed 13 billion years ago; Charles Messier discovered it in 1764. Though its stars are mostly old, some appear to reclaim their youth as "blue stragglers," formed in near head-on collisions or by siphoning hydrogen from a companion star.
Every detail comes from real Hubble Space Telescope data, with the color image assembled from exposures taken through different filters. This is not an artist's rendering or digital illustration — it is an authentic image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope.
