About Earthrise
The first time people watched Earth rise over the Moon. On December 24, 1968, Christmas Eve, the Apollo 8 crew photographed the rising Earth from lunar orbit, about 240,000 miles from home.
In this telephoto view, Earth hangs about five degrees above the lunar horizon, which lay about 570 km from the spacecraft. On Earth, the sunset line crosses Africa, while North and South America sit beneath the clouds. NASA image AS08-14-2383 is printed here with its date, mission, horizon distance and image ID.
The colors are real. This is an authentic photograph taken by the Apollo 8 crew, not an artist's rendering or digital illustration.
