About the Helix Nebula
The glowing breath of a dying star. The James Webb Space Telescope's NIRCam zoomed in on the Helix Nebula (NGC 7293), about 650 light-years away in Aquarius, where a dying Sun-like star is shedding its outer layers of gas.
Thousands of orange and gold comet-like knots stream along the nebula's glowing rim, sculpted by fierce stellar winds and the layers of gas cast off by the star. Webb's sharp view also shows the stark transition from the hottest gas to the coolest as the shell expands away from the central white dwarf.
Webb sees in infrared light, which is invisible to human eyes, so the colors you see are translated from infrared into visible hues. This is not an artist's rendering or digital illustration — it is an authentic image from the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope.
