About the Hubble Deep Field

The Hubble Deep Field (HDF) is a long exposure image of a very small region of the sky in Ursa Major, assembled from hundreds of observations taken by the Hubble Space Telescope over roughly ten days in December 1995. The area is only about 2.6 arcminutes across - roughly the size of a tennis ball seen from 100 meters away - yet it contains around 3,000 galaxies spanning a huge range of distances and ages.

Before the Hubble Deep Field, astronomers had only a limited sample of very distant galaxies. The HDF revealed that the sky is filled with faint, young galaxies, giving scientists a powerful way to study galaxy formation, evolution, and the early universe. It remains a cornerstone of observational cosmology and has inspired later deep surveys like the Hubble Ultra Deep Field and eXtreme Deep Field.
