About NGC 5861 in Libra
The real sky behind your sign. NGC 5861 is an intermediate spiral galaxy about 85 million light-years away in the constellation Libra, imaged by the Hubble Space Telescope in 2020.
An intermediate spiral sits between two classic shapes: a barred spiral, with a bar-shaped structure at its center, and an unbarred spiral without one. Two supernovae, SN 1971D and SN 2017erp, have been observed in this galaxy.
Every detail comes from real Hubble Space Telescope data, with the color image assembled from exposures taken through different filters. This is not an artist's rendering or digital illustration — it is an authentic image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope.
