About the Lunar Cycle
The Moon completes one full cycle of phases every 29.5 days, known as a synodic month, as it orbits Earth and the angle between the Sun, Earth, and Moon changes. This cycle has been observed and celebrated by every human civilization throughout history, governing calendars, agriculture, tides, navigation, and cultural traditions worldwide. The eight phases displayed in this poster represent the Moon's complete journey: New Moon (the Moon positioned between Earth and Sun, its illuminated side facing away), Waxing Crescent (a thin sliver of light appearing on the right side in the Northern Hemisphere), First Quarter (the right half illuminated, often called a "half moon"), Waxing Gibbous (more than half illuminated, growing toward full), Full Moon (the entire face illuminated as Earth sits between Sun and Moon), Waning Gibbous (light beginning to decrease from the left side), Last Quarter (the left half illuminated), and Waning Crescent (a thin sliver remaining before returning to new moon). The Moon's gravitational pull drives Earth's ocean tides, with the strongest tides (spring tides) occurring during new and full moon phases when the Sun, Earth, and Moon align. The surface detail visible in each phase reveals impact craters formed over billions of years, dark basaltic plains called maria (Latin for "seas") that early astronomers mistook for oceans, bright highland regions of the lunar crust, and mountain ranges created by ancient impacts. This poster is oriented for Northern Hemisphere viewing, where the illuminated portion grows from right to left during waxing phases and shrinks from right to left during waning phases.
