The Sword of Orion is the vertical line of “stars” hanging from Orion’s belt. In reality, this region is a busy star-forming complex about 1,450 light-years away, packed with glowing nebulae, cold dust clouds, and thousands of young stars. The brightest part is the Orion Nebula (M42), joined by neighboring M43 and the reflection nebula NGC 1977.

NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope observed this area in infrared light, peeling back layers of dust that hide newborn stars in visible wavelengths.
