About the Tarantula Nebula (30 Doradus)
The Tarantula Nebula, officially designated 30 Doradus, is one of the largest and most active star-forming regions in the Local Group of galaxies. Located in the Large Magellanic Cloud approximately 160,000 light-years from Earth, this cosmic stellar nursery spans roughly 1,000 light-years across — large enough that if it were as close to Earth as the Orion Nebula, it would cover 30 degrees of the night sky (60 times the size of the full moon). The nebula gets its nickname from the spider-like appearance of its filaments of gas and dust when viewed through ground telescopes. The James Webb Space Telescope's Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) captured this image in 2022, revealing unprecedented detail of the region's central cavity hollowed out by intense stellar winds from massive young stars. The image shows thousands of young, hot blue stars previously obscured by cosmic dust, along with the glowing red and orange clouds of ionized hydrogen gas heated by ultraviolet radiation from the newborn stars. At the heart of 30 Doradus lies R136, a dense cluster containing some of the most massive stars ever discovered — some exceeding 150 times the mass of our Sun. This poster celebrates humanity's newest cosmic eye and the remarkable science that allows us to peer deeper into the universe than ever before, bringing the awe-inspiring scale and beauty of stellar birth into your home.
