About the Crab Nebula in Taurus
The real sky behind your sign. Messier 1, the Crab Nebula, is a supernova remnant about 6,500 light-years away in the constellation Taurus, the wreckage of an exploded star.
This Hubble mosaic, released in 2005, was assembled from 24 individual exposures. At the time it was the largest image ever taken with Hubble's WFPC2 camera and the highest-resolution view of the entire Crab Nebula ever made. The Crab is among the most interesting and well-studied objects in astronomy.
Every detail comes from real Hubble Space Telescope data, with the color image assembled from exposures taken through different filters. This is not an artist's rendering or digital illustration — it is an authentic image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope.
