About Uranus
Uranus, the seventh planet from the Sun, is an ice giant located 1.8 billion miles from Earth. Unlike any other planet in our solar system, Uranus rotates on its side with an axial tilt of 98 degrees, likely caused by a massive collision billions of years ago. The planet's pale blue-green color comes from methane in its atmosphere, which absorbs red light and reflects blue and green wavelengths. Voyager 2 flew past Uranus on January 25, 1986, becoming the first and only spacecraft to visit this distant ice giant. The encounter revealed 10 new moons, discovered two new rings, and captured this iconic image showing Uranus's smooth, featureless atmosphere. At negative 320 degrees Fahrenheit with winds reaching 560 mph, Uranus remains one of the coldest and most mysterious planets in our solar system.
