The Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness is a roughly 45,000 acre wilderness area in San Juan County, New Mexico, known for steeply eroded badlands, multicolored sedimentary layers, and strange hoodoo formations. It is managed by the Bureau of Land Management and is often called the Bisti Badlands. The name “Bisti” comes from a Navajo word often translated as “among the adobe formations,” while “De-Na-Zin” refers to “cranes” and is linked to local petroglyphs.
Over time, wind and water have carved the soft sandstone, shale, and mudstone into hoodoos, spires, balanced rocks, and intricate formations that draw photographers, hikers, and explorers from around the world. This high desert landscape sits south of Farmington and offers wide open views, big skies, and a true sense of remoteness.
