About the Opossum
The Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) is North America’s only marsupial and is common in cities and suburbs as well as forests. It is a nocturnal omnivore with a prehensile tail, opposable hind toe, and a remarkable threat response often called “playing possum.” Wildlife agencies note it has 50 teeth and is highly resistant to rabies compared with many mammals. Urban ecology programs frequently document opossums using parks, alleys, and backyard corridors where food and cover overlap. Learn more from the sources below.
