About The High Line NYC

The High Line transformed from abandoned eyesore to international icon, becoming one of New York City's most transformative urban renewal success stories. Built in the 1930s as an elevated freight rail line serving Manhattan's industrial West Side—part of the larger "West Side Improvement" project that eliminated dangerous street-level railroad crossections—the structure carried goods to factories and warehouses until 1980 when the last train ran carrying frozen turkeys. After two decades of abandonment, during which nature reclaimed the tracks with wildflowers and grasses, community activists Joshua David and Robert Hammond fought demolition plans and championed transformation into public space. Opening in sections between 2009-2014, the 1.45-mile linear park stretches from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District through Chelsea to Hudson Yards, elevated 30 feet above street level. Landscape architecture firm James Corner Field Operations, architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro, and planting designer Piet Oudolf created a design respecting the railway's industrial character while introducing over 500 species of perennials, grasses, shrubs, and trees—many native to the region. The park features contemporary art installations, Diller-von Furstenberg Sundeck seating areas, the 10th Avenue Square viewing window, Chelsea Thicket woodlands, wildflower fields, and the iconic Vessel at Hudson Yards. From its reclaimed railroad tracks and original steel rails to stunning views of the Hudson River and Manhattan skyline, The High Line offers unique perspectives on the city—where visitors can walk among native plantings, view public art, and experience urban nature. The park catalyzed massive neighborhood transformation, inspiring billions in adjacent real estate development while remaining free and accessible. It sparked the global movement of adaptive reuse and elevated parks from Paris to Seoul. This poster celebrates The High Line's visionary transformation of industrial infrastructure into beloved public space—proof that cities can honor heritage while reimagining the future.
